If you hadn't heard earlier, WebOS is now fully open sourced. As promised back in January, HP has released Open WebOS 1.0 right on time and now the public can get it's hands on it. As we all are lovers of open source, this is pretty cool. While HP has only been able to get it working on computers, WebOS Ports has done something even cooler: they got it working on the GSM Galaxy Nexus. At this point, this really can't be a daily driver. They have yet to get the hardware acceleration working, hence the lag seen in the video. Most phone functions (SMS, calling, etc) don't work, and you can only connect via WiFI. Keep in mind, however, that this is a major feat. According to one of the developers, morphis, this project has been in development for two months, but we can expect more usability coming in the next few weeks. Until that time, the team won't be posting a method to get it on your device.
This brings up a pretty good question. The Nexus line is beloved because of its openness, and there's little doubt that we'll see more functional ports appear down the line. Should the Android community welcome Open WebOS ports with open arms, or is it just going to be the annoying uncle who shows up smelling like a horse barn and whiskey and doesn't know when to go home?
