Windows 8 upgrade path leaked, XP fans rejoice

In late May, Microsoft confirmed that consumers who buy new PCs with Windows 7 installed will be able to get them upgraded to Windows 8 for a fee of $14.99 from now until the end of January 2013. But what about all those older PCs that have already been purchased? ZDnet.com reports, via unnamed sources, that Microsoft has shared information about that aspect of the Windows 8 upgrade path with some select partners.

According to the story, current owners of PCs with Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic and Windows 7 Home Premium will be able to update to the regular edition of Windows 8 while also keeping their current settings, files and applications. All of those owners, plus people who have Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate, will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro while keeping their current settings, files and applications.

If you are a person who works with a PC in a business that has Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise installed, you can upgrade to Windows 8 Enterprise while also keeping your current settings, files and applications.

If you are one of the few who still has Windows Vista installed on your PC but have not updated it with its first Service Pack, you will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 but can only keep your personal files with the update. If you have Vista with SP1 installed, you can upgrade to Windows 8 and keep both your personal data and your system settings.

Finally, if you are one of the many people who still uses Windows XP, the good news is that you can upgrade to Windows 8. The bad news is that only personal data will be maintained when the upgrade is complete.

ZDNet.com also reports that you won't be able to keep your settings, files and applications if you are attempting a cross-language update from your previous Windows OS to Windows 8. Finally, there won't be any upgrade at all allowed if you have a 32-bit OS and you want to move to a 64-bit version of Windows 8.

There are very few games next month, and I'm ok with that ...

desert

We?ve been bombarded with incredible games since last year ? but it looks like the flow of quality gaming will slow down to little more than a trickle next month ? and really, I?m ok with that.

PC gamers will be treated to the MMO? The Secret World, play with gravity in inversion, kit out their virtual people with virtual branded crap with The Sims 3 Diesel Stuff Pack, and destroy a sandbox world in Prototype 2. slim pickings, really ? but console gamers have it even worse. They too get to dabble with gravity thanks to Inversion?and play platinum Games new beat the hell out of everything simulator?but that?s really it. The 3DS gets two genuinely interesting games in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy ? an odd blend of music rhythm and JRPG; and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance ? the seventh game in the charming as all hell blend of Square RPGs with Disney characters.

Compared to..pretty much every month since August last year, that?s slim pickings for gamers who?ve had to choose which particular AAA blockbusters to get each month. Of course this discounts some of the pretty incredible downloadable titles we?ll be getting on XBLA and PSN ? but I can?t say I?m displeased with the lack of gaming to be had next month.

I think I need a break ? and that horrible thing called gamer fatigue has set in. I don?t know if it?s just because it?s the end of a console generation and there?s very little that?s genuinely exciting, if I?m getting really old, or if I?ve just played to many damned good games that nothing gets the blood flowing ? but I?ll say this; for the first time in my life playing games is starting to feel like a chore.

I?m happy to have a couple of weeks break from videogames next month, and let those gamers batteries recharge a bit.

What about you? Are you saddened by the dearth of games next month or will you, like me, take the opportunity to give it a break for a bit.

Reduce Travel Costs With Conference Calling
The recent economic downturn has prompted many companies, big and small, cheap adidas shoes, to have a close look at their expenses. Business travel forms a major chunk of annual expenses for several companies, so that is one of the areas where a lot of cost cutting is involved. But to run a successful business, it is essential to keep communication lines open. Without communicating regularly with business partners and clients, there is little chance that any business will survive in the highly competitive market of today.

So how do smart companies manage to cut down on travel costs, adidas football australia, yet communicate with major stake holders and colleagues on a regular basis? The answer is teleconferencing. By availing of the sophisticated conferencing solutions offered by reputed Teleconferencing Service providers, jeremy scott adidas, businesses can have the best of both worlds.

Every year millions of travel miles are logged by business travellers all over the world. Imagine the kind of savings companies can make by minimising the travel without compromising on the frequency and quality of communication. By making regular conference calls, adidas football shoes, colleagues who are spread across different parts of the world can keep each other updated on the progress of the project they or working on or any other matter of importance.

Conferencing services have a wide variety of applications in business. Companies routinely bank on call conferencing for sales presentations, client meetings, project updates and sharing the results of company performance. If people start travelling for all these for a face to face meeting, adidas shoes womens, the travel expenses will be tremendous. By choosing to teleconference instead, adidas football shoes, companies can keep their overheads at a minimum.

A voice conference is basically a telephone call where 3 or more people can communicate at the same time. There is no need for sophisticated and expensive equipment for telephone conferencing. All you need is a normal telephone line using which you dial into the conference bridge to get connected to the right call. Therefore, adidas shoes womens, there is no initial investment either for businesses wishing to switch to phone conferencing instead of regular travel.

Conference call service providers offer not just audio conferencing facilities where participants are only able to hear each other, but video and web conferencing as well. Video allows you to see other members while web conferencing allows you to even transfer files in real time.

By choosing the right service provider, adidas shoes, businesses can manage client communications very effectively and build a new level of interaction between own teams and customers? teams.

Considering all the above, running shoes, and not forgetting the environmental concerns due to carbon emissions from aircrafts and automobiles, adidas shoes womens, businesses have a very clear financial inducement to embrace conference calling.

Robot beats you at rock-paper-scissors every single time

21 hrs.

When someone claims they're good at rock-paper-scissors, they're usually just trying to psyche you out so they can predict your next move. But this robot, created by the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory in Japan,?doesn't need to psyche you out, because it knows it will beat you every single time.

How can it do it? One thing it certainly doesn't do is any kind of high-level analysis of the game. It doesn't put your last sequence of moves through a complex semantic analysis and try to predict the move. It doesn't use anti-random tactics like "five scissors in a row" to throw you off. All it needs is a high-speed camera and quick reflexes.

Yes, the robot cheats. By watching the image from a camera that can determine the position of your hand every millisecond, it is aware of your move the very moment you make it. And as soon as your hand starts to form that rock, the robot is giving you some paper to wrap it up. At the very end of the video, you can see the tiny delay between the human making a move and the robot reacting ?? but it happens so fast that you wouldn't notice except when shown in slow-motion.

Doesn't seem fair, does it? But since humans can't see or react on a millisecond timescale, such a tactic would never even be considered. It's precisely because reaction time doesn't come into it that rock-paper-scissors?becomes a game of psychology or dumb luck. Similarly, our vision isn't good enough to read a person's cards in the reflection of their eyes, and we're not skillful enough with our hands to control the outcome of dice.

Robots, on the other hand, could be fast enough, far-sighted enough, or precise enough that they could do any of those things. In this case, the robot can think and react in the time it takes you to make your play. Sure it's cheating ?? but it's still quite a trick.

The lab built the setup to show how quickly a robot arm and vision system could accommodate human input; that hand could just as easily be remotely operating in a hostile area or amplifying those movements to pick up construction materials. They have many other interesting?projects along this line documented on their Web?page.

Of course, what everyone wants to know is: What happens if they build a second one and have them play each other?

Why Product Reviews Help a Lot

It?s obviously clear that everything we own and every product we fancy in local stores can now be viewed, accessible and purchased online. If we talk about one of the revolutionary contributions of the birth of the world-wide-web, it should be the convenience in shopping and purchase. The consumer market felt like doubled when e-commerce sites such as eBay and Amazon opened their webpages to the public. That?s exactly why a lot more people today are preferring to obtain and make an online purchase considering that not only do people find all the things they desire, the price tags of mostly every product sold are far lesser and more affordable. It doesn?t really matter what you?re purchasing, home and garden products, kitchen equipment, or electronic gadgets. The thing is that more and more sellers are abandoning their posts in local stores and instead putting up some new ones online.

But shopping on the web also corresponds to certain risks. Not every seller and internet marketer can be reliable, specifically when they are given the opportunity to submit false details when offering anything that could make them rich on the web. Scams are incredibly prevalent and it normally takes certain experience and expertise to spot individuals that promote in good values and those that don?t. At the same time, its not all items are of good standard. The truth is, there?s a strong possibility that the things you invested in was in fact impaired or simply not satisfying. Nonetheless, it doesn?t deny the fact online shopping is still incredibly surviving.

There?s no other better means of securing an online purchase than being able to look at product reviews and performing additional homework. For instance, you might want to check out the brand and history of sports and leisure stuff, IT gadgets, mobile phones, or even dog food. Product reviews are all online. However the best advice to buy something is centered on doing research to begin with. Lots of people don?t know it yet every time they spend money on the internet, they don?t enjoy the liberty to look at the item in person. But simply by looking at product reviews, anyone in essence acquire a more desirable preview and motivation as to whether choose the merchandise or move on and look for one more.

Please don?t forget to keep yourself away from overexposed and unbelievable marketing offers. Sellers will do and offer anything simply to set up a bargain and it?s also your job as the good consumer to be smart enough to determine which products and which sellers tell the right kind of quality they?re offering.

Tropical Storm Debby drenches Florida

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Practically parked off Florida's Gulf Coast since the weekend, Tropical Storm Debby raked the Tampa Bay area with high wind and heavy rain Monday in a drenching that could top 2 feet over the next few days and trigger widespread flooding.

At least one person was killed Sunday by a tornado spun off by Debby in Florida, and Alabama authorities searched for a man who disappeared in the rough surf.

An estimated 35,000 homes and businesses lost electricity. But as of midafternoon, the slow-moving storm had caused only scattered damage, including flooding in some low-lying areas.

The bridge leading to St. George Island, a vacation spot along the Florida Panhandle, was closed to everyone except residents, renters and business owners to keep looters out. The island had no power, and palm trees had been blown down, but roads were passable.

"Most true islanders are hanging in there because they know that you may or may not be able to get back to your home when you need to," said David Walker, an island resident having a beer at Eddy Teach's bar. He said he had been through many storms on the island and Debby was on the weaker end of the scale.

Gov. Rick Scott declared a statewide emergency, allowing authorities to put laws against price-gouging into effect and override bureaucratic hurdles to deal with the storm.

By late afternoon, Debby was in the Gulf of Mexico, 30 miles southwest of Apalachicola, with sustained winds around 45 mph.

Forecasters said it would crawl to the northeast, come ashore along Florida's northwestern coast on Wednesday and track slowly across the state, exiting along the Atlantic Coast by Saturday morning and losing steam along the way.

Parts of northern Florida could get 10 to 15 inches of rain, and some spots as much as 25 inches, as the storm wrings itself out, forecasters said.

"The widespread flooding is the biggest concern," said Florida Emergency Operations Center spokeswoman Julie Roberts. "It's a concern that Debby is going to be around for the next couple of days, and while it sits there, it's going to continue to drop rain. The longer it sits, the more rain we get."

High winds and the threat of flooding forced the closing of an interstate highway bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southwest.

People in several sparsely populated counties near the crook of Florida's elbow were urged to leave low-lying neighborhoods because of the danger of flooding. Shelters opened in some places.

On St. Pete Beach in the Tampa Bay area, surfers enjoyed the large waves in the Gulf, which is usually so calm the water looks like glass. Residents cleaned up debris in yards and streets from a possible tornado Sunday.

"The wind picked up so bad. It's very, very scary. I ran into the closet underneath the hallway stairs," said Ann Garrison, who has lived on the barrier island for 20 years but has never seen such strong winds. She said that when she came back out after just a few minutes, "the fence was gone, and it was in the middle of the yard."

Nearby, a likely tornado ripped the roof off a marina and an apartment complex and knocked down fences, trees and signs.

Kourosh Bakhtiarian's yard was flooded. He said people were driving around the neighborhood to gawk at the damage, and he complained that police hadn't closed off the streets.

"We have a lot of visitors from outside of this area. They just want to see exactly where the disaster is. I mean, this is not the happiest time," he said.

On St. George Island, many businesses were closed, but Eddy Teach's bar had a few customers and used a generator to keep beer and food cold.

"The tourists cleared out. It's not a good thing and hurts the economy during a week in peak season," said Patrick Sparks, a manager at the bar. He scoffed at the storm, which was well below the 74 mph threshold for a hurricane: "It's a little rash to send everyone home."

Farrington reported from St. George Island. Associated Press writers Freida Frisaro and Christine Armario in Miami; Gary Fineout in Tallahassee; and AP Auto Writer Dee-Ann Durbin in Detroit contributed to this report.

Texas Man Is Accused of Threatening Tennessee Mosque

Texas Man Is Accused of Threatening Tennessee Mosque
Kim Severson ("The New York Times," June 22, 2012)

A Texas man was indicted Thursday, accused of threatening to use violence to stop construction of a mosque that for two years has divided the community of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and has become a national barometer of anti-Muslim sentiment.

The United States Justice Department said the indictment was an aggressive stance in support of religious freedom and was intended as a warning to people who might resort to violence and other illegal activity to prevent the mosque or any other religious institution to operate.

?What we?re hoping is that this sends a very strong message to any would-be individual who would threaten a mosque or take an action that would result in an individual?s constitutional rights being violated,? United States Attorney Jerry Martin said Thursday afternoon.

A federal grand jury indicted Javier A. Correa, 24, of Corpus Christi, Tex., accusing him of violating the civil rights of members of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro in connection with a long, threatening message he is said to have left on the center?s phone last September.

Amid a slew of threats and profanity was this sentence: ?On Sept. 11, 2011, there?s going to be a bomb in the building,? according to the indictment. Mr. Martin would not say how investigators connected Mr. Correa to the crime but said the man had used a cellphone.

Charges include intentionally obstructing by threat of force the free exercise of religious beliefs and of using an instrument of interstate commerce to communicate a threat to destroy a building by means of an explosive device. The authorities said they were negotiating a surrender date with a lawyer for Mr. Correa.

The Justice Department has been investigating threats and violence against the Islamic community in Murfreesboro, which is about a half-hour southeast of Nashville, for almost two years. Leaders of the congregation have been building a 12,000-square-foot mosque and community center, hoping to open it before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins at the end of July.

Since the project began, the site has been repeatedly vandalized, construction equipment has been set on fire and residents have tried to block the project in court. The F.B.I. and other federal agencies are investigating a 2010 fire as a possible hate crime.

Opponents? arguments have ranged from assertions that it would increase traffic and damage water quality in the growing city of about 100,000 to concerns that the new center would serve as a cover for radical Muslims and Islamic law.

Public hearings about its construction in 2010 turned into a trial of the validity of Islam, with residents arguing that the center was part of a plot to replace the Constitution with Shariah law. A protest and counterprotest drew nearly 800 people, and a local Republican candidate for Congress tried to link the center to the Palestinian group Hamas.

Still, the building permit was granted. Opponents filed suit in state court contesting it, and were handed a victory this month when Chancellor Robert E. Corlew III ruled that the Rutherford County Planning Commission did not give sufficient notice of the hearing.

County officials have appealed the ruling and construction is continuing, but officials cannot issue the final permits so the center can be used.

Since the ruling, local Muslim leaders and the Council on American-Islamic Relations have been working with the Justice Department, which has filed a brief in support of the mosque in that case, and are watching the permitting process carefully.

What was he thinking? Study turns to ape intellect

In this Dec. 13, 2006 photo provided by the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University, a 5 1/2-year-old chimpanzee named Ayumu performs a memory test with randomly-placed consecutive Arabic numerals, which are later masked, accurately duplicating the lineup on a touch screen computer in Kyoto, Japan. The young chimpanzees in the study titled "Working memory of numerals in chimpanzees" by Sana Inoue and Tetsuro Matsuzawa could memorize the nine numerals much faster and more accurately than human adults. The evidence that animals are more intelligent and more social than we thought seems to grow each year, especially when it comes to primates. (AP) ? The more we study animals, the less special we seem.

Baboons can distinguish between written words and gibberish. Monkeys seem to be able to do multiplication. Apes can delay instant gratification longer than a human child can. They plan ahead. They make war and peace. They show empathy. They share.

"It's not a question of whether they think ? it's how they think," says Duke University scientist Brian Hare. Now scientists wonder if apes are capable of thinking about what other apes are thinking.

The evidence that animals are more intelligent and more social than we thought seems to grow each year, especially when it comes to primates. It's an increasingly hot scientific field with the number of ape and monkey cognition studies doubling in recent years, often with better technology and neuroscience paving the way to unusual discoveries.

This month scientists mapping the DNA of the bonobo ape found that, like the chimp, bonobos are only 1.3 percent different from humans.

Says Josep Call, director of the primate research center at the Max Planck Institute in Germany: "Every year we discover things that we thought they could not do."

Call says one of his recent more surprising studies showed that apes can set goals and follow through with them.

Orangutans and bonobos in a zoo were offered eight possible tools ? two of which would help them get at some food. At times when they chose the proper tool, researchers moved the apes to a different area before they could get the food, and then kept them waiting as much as 14 hours. In nearly every case, when the apes realized they were being moved, they took their tool with them so they could use it to get food the next day, remembering that even after sleeping. The goal and series of tasks didn't leave the apes' minds.

Call says this is similar to a person packing luggage a day before a trip: "For humans it's such a central ability, it's so important."

For a few years, scientists have watched chimpanzees in zoos collect and store rocks as weapons for later use. In May, a study found they even add deception to the mix. They created haystacks to conceal their stash of stones from opponents, just like nations do with bombs.

Hare points to studies where competing chimpanzees enter an arena where one bit of food is hidden from view for only one chimp. The chimp that can see the hidden food, quickly learns that his foe can't see it and uses that to his advantage, displaying the ability to perceive another ape's situation. That's a trait humans develop as toddlers, but something we thought other animals never got, Hare said.

And then there is the amazing monkey memory.

At the National Zoo in Washington, humans who try to match their recall skills with an orangutan's are humbled. Zoo associate director Don Moore says: "I've got a Ph.D., for God's sake, you would think I could out-think an orang and I can't."

In French research, at least two baboons kept memorizing so many pictures ? several thousand ? that after three years researchers ran out of time before the baboons reached their limit. Researcher Joel Fagot at the French National Center for Scientific Research figured they could memorize at least 10,000 and probably more.

And a chimp in Japan named Ayumu who sees strings of numbers flash on a screen for a split-second regularly beats humans at accurately duplicating the lineup. He's a YouTube sensation, along with orangutans in a Miami zoo that use iPads.

It's not just primates that demonstrate surprising abilities.

Dolphins, whose brains are 25 percent heavier than humans, recognize themselves in a mirror. So do elephants. A study in June finds that black bears can do primitive counting, something even pigeons have done, by putting two dots before five, or 10 before 20 in one experiment.

The trend in research is to identify some new thinking skill that chimps can do, revealing that certain abilities are "not uniquely human," said Emory University primatologist Frans de Waal. Then the scientists find that same ability in other primates further removed from humans genetically. Then they see it in dogs and elephants.

"Capacities that we think in humans are very special and complex are probably not so special and not so complex," de Waal said. "This research in animals elevates the animals, but it also brings down the humans.... If monkeys can do it and maybe dogs and other animals, maybe it's not as complex as you think."

At Duke, professor Elizabeth Brannon shows videos of monkeys that appear to be doing a "fuzzy representation" of multiplication by following the number of dots that go into a box on a computer screen and choosing the right answer to come out of the box. This is after they've already done addition and subtraction.

This spring in France, researchers showed that six baboons could distinguish between fake and real four-letter words ? BRRU vs KITE, for example. And they chose to do these computer-based exercises of their own free will, either for fun or a snack.

It was once thought the control of emotions and the ability to empathize and socialize separated us from our primate cousins. But chimps console, and fight, each other. They also try to soothe an upset companion, grooming and putting their arms around him.

"I see plenty of empathy in my chimpanzees," de Waal said. But studies have shown they also go to war against neighboring colonies, killing the males and taking the females. That's something that also is very human and led people to believe that war-making must go back in our lineage 6 million years, de Waal said.

When scientists look at our other closest relative, the bonobo, they see a difference. Bonobos don't kill. Hare says his experiments show bonobos give food to newcomer bonobos, even when they could choose to keep all the food themselves.

One reason scientists are learning more about animal intellect is computers, including touch screens. In some cases, scientists are setting up banks of computers available to primates 24-7. In the French word recognition experiment, Fagot found he got more and better data when it was the baboons' choice to work.

Animal cognition researcher Steve Ross at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago agrees.

"The apes in our case seem to be working better when they have that control, that choice to perform," he said.

Brain scans on monkeys and apes also have helped correct mistaken views about ape brain power. It was once thought the prefrontal cortex, the area in charge of higher reasoning, was disproportionately larger than the rest of the brain only in humans, giving us a cognitive advantage, Hare said. But imaging shows that monkey and ape prefrontal cortexes have that same larger scale, he said.

What's different is that the human communication system in the prefrontal cortex is more complex, Hare said.

So there are limits to what non-human primates can do. Animals don't have the ability to communicate with the complexity of human language. In the French study, the baboons can recognize that the letters KITE make a word because through trial and error they learn which letters tend to go together in what order. But the baboons don't have a clue of what KITE means. It's that gap that's key. "The boundaries are not as sharp as people think, but there are certain things you can't overcome and language is one of them," said Columbia University animal cognition researcher Herbert Terrace.

And that leads to another difference, Ross said. Because apes lack language skills, they learn by watching and mimicking. Humans teach with language and explanation, which is faster and better, Ross said.

Some of the shifts in scientific understanding of animals are leading to ethical debates. When Emory University researcher Lori Marino in 2001 co-wrote a groundbreaking study on dolphins recognizing themselves in mirrors, proving they have a sense of self similar to humans, she had a revelation.

"The more you learn about them, the more you realize that they do have the capacity and characteristics that we think of as a person," Marino said. "I think it's impossible to ignore the ethical implications of these kinds of findings."

After the two dolphins she studied died when transferred to another aquarium, she decided never to work on captive dolphins again. She then became a science adviser to the Nonhuman Rights Project, which seeks legal rights or status for animals. The idea, Marino said, is to get animals such as dolphins "to be deemed a person, not property."

The intelligence of primates was one of the factors behind a report last year by the Institute of Medicine that said the National Institutes of Health should reduce dramatically the number of chimpanzees it uses in biomedical research.

The NIH is working on new guidelines that would further limit federal medical chimpanzee use down from its current few dozen chimps at any given time, said NIH program planning chief James Anderson. Chimps are a special case, with their use "very, very limited," he said. But he raises the question: "What happens if your child is sick or your mother is dying" and animal research might lead to a cure?

The issue is more about animal welfare and giving them the right "not to be killed, not to be tortured, not to be confined unnecessarily" than giving them legal standing, said David DeGrazia, a philosophy and ethics professor at George Washington University.

Hare says that focusing on animal rights ignores the problem of treatment of chimps in research settings. He contends that for behavioral studies and even for many medical research tests they could be kept in zoos or sanctuaries rather than labs.

Animals performing tasks in near-natural habitats "is like an Ivy League college" for the apes, Hare said. "We're going to see them do stunning and sophisticated things."

Laura Jane Grace And Against Me! Answer Your Questions

Fans submitted questions about Laura's new transgender life and the future of the band ... here's how they answered.
By James Montgomery

Laura Jane Grace
Photo:

When Against Me! agreed to sit down with MTV News for their first on-camera interview since frontwoman Laura Jane Grace announced she was transgender, they made two things abundantly clear: No topic was off limits, and they wanted to hear from their fans.

And all week, we've been rolling out prime examples of the former — Laura's frank discussion of her life-long struggle with gender dysphoria, her bandmates' acceptance of her new life, and the painful process of coming out to family and friends. But today, we're going to focus on the latter.

Because we asked AM! fans to submit questions for Laura and the band, and they delivered. And, true to their words, Against Me! answered as many as they possibly could (they did have to soundcheck for the night's gig). And we can think of no better way to wrap up the week than by bringing those answers to you now.

From questions about how Laura's new life will affect Against Me!'s new album — "It's a huge part of it," bassist Andrew Seward said, though Laura was quick to add "I think it's up to us to make a record that speaks for itself" — to how her life would have changed if she'd been born a woman on the outside ("I think I probably wouldn't have gotten arrested so many times when I was younger," she laughed), the band's fans made it clear that, not only have they been following this story from the beginning, but they can't wait to see what happens next.

Tellingly, though, we received questions from young men and women who, like Laura, were struggling with their own gender — many of whom now look up to her as a role model. And as she did throughout our interview, Laura did her best to answer with the kind of humility and honesty that made our chat so compelling in the first place.

"I've been completely blown away; the most amazing part for me is the amount of trans men and women who have been coming out to the shows and meeting them after and talking with them. I'll have a lot of them come up to me and be like 'It's amazing, what you're doing, and I look up to you so much,' " she said. "And it blows me away, because I look at them, and they're so much further along in their transition, and it's like 'What you're doing for me, by being here right now, is beyond whatever you think I'm doing for you.' Just being able to make that connection ... because I had no friends in that world. And to make those connections, that is half of what I wanted to accomplish by coming out, to be part of that community."

Pandigital Handheld Wand Scanner (PanScn08)

The Pandigital Handheld Wand Scanner (PanScn08) ($109. 99 direct) has a lot in common with the Pandigital Portable Wand Scanner with Feeder Dock (PanScn09) ($119. 99 direct, 2. 5 stars) that I recently reviewed. It has also some important differences. The most obvious is that it doesn't include a dock, which adds size and weight along with a paper feed capability. If what you need is strictly a wand scanner, with an emphasis on portability, however, the PanScn08 is the more appropriate choice. (And note that it's available in several essentially identical versions, some of which add a pair of letters to the name, after the 08.)

At 1.4 by 10.4 by 1. 5 inches (HWD) and 0. 5 pounds, the PanScn08 isn't as small as the PlanOn DocuPen Xtreme X05 ($369. 99 direct 3. 5 stars) wand scanner, and it doesn't look as much like an actual wand. However, it works the same way, letting you scan by starting at the top of the page, and scanning down in a single sweep. Rollers on the bottom of the scanner make it easy to sweep down the page smoothly and evenly.

Another feature the PanScn08 shares with the DocuPen Xtreme X05, as well as with the PanScn09, is that it scans to memory rather than to a computer. Pandigital includes a 2GB microSD card to save the scanned files to. When you're ready to move them to a computer, you can use the supplied microSD adaptor to plug the card into your computer, or you can connect using the supplied USB cable, let the computer recognize the card in the scanner as USB memory, and copy the files.

Setup and Scanning
Wand scanners don't generally need a lot of setup. With the PanScn08 you only have to insert the microSD card and rechargeable battery, and let it charge for two hours. While you're waiting, you can optionally install NewSoft Presto! PageManager, a document management program, and the only application Pandigital includes with the scanner. The program is limited in many ways, but it includes an OCR module that will let you convert scanned documents to editable text or searchable PDF files.

Not so incidentally, the rechargeable battery is one of the other differences (besides the dock) between the PanScn08 and PanScn09, and it's the one difference in the PanScn08's favor. The only other important difference is that the PanScn09 includes a color display that lets you see a thumbnail of the scans, so you can rescan if there's something obviously wrong with the image. With the PanScn08, you have to wait until you get back to your computer and transfer the files, at which point you may not have the originals to rescan.

Scanning with the PanScn08 is easy. The scanner offers one button to toggle between color mode and grayscale, one for 300 ppi versus 600 ppi, and one for JPG versus PDF format. Simply choose your settings and scan. As with other wand scanners, I didn't have any trouble getting good scans from the beginning?at least, not at 300 ppi. It took a few tries at 600 ppi to learn to slow down to the right speed.

Scan Results
Given the one program the scanner comes with, the only two applications I could test it for were optical character recognition (OCR) and document management. It didn't score well on either, but only because of limitations in the software.

For OCR, the combination of the scanner and PageManager did reasonably well at recognizing text. However, the formatting was so far off the mark that I couldn't even determine what font sizes it managed to read without a mistake. Similarly, the document management score suffered from PageManager's limitations for converting files to searchable PDF format.

Pandigital doesn't include any photo editing software, but I scanned some photos to get a sense of the photo scan capability. Most of the scans qualified as roughly snapshot quality, which makes the scanner good enough for casual photo scanning, but not suitable for anything more demanding.

The Pandigital Handheld Wand Scanner (PanScn08) is potentially attractive for portable scanning, but is also severely limited by the software Pandigital includes. If it came with a more capable set of programs, as with the Editors' Choice Visioneer Mobility ($199. 99 direct, 4 stars), for example, it would be a much stronger contender. As it is, it earns a recommendation as being worth considering, but only if you already own the software you need or are willing to buy it elsewhere.

But wait, there's more: according to the?Detroit Free Press, demand for gasoline has plummeted4.8%?in the past few days, hitting levels not seen since October. And according to our notes from Econ 101, reduced demand means reduced prices. (Note: this comes at a time when consumption in the U.S. is already declining, which has made?America a net exporter of gas and diesel.)?

And as if that weren't enough, the price of crude?oil?has dipped below $80 a barrel, which is also?something we haven't seen since October. Oil now sits 30% below its March highs, and analysts across the board are at odds over when prices will rebound, with most blaming the sluggish European economy for the drop-off. That should help keep gas prices on the retreat -- at least for a while.

Good news for travelers?

Obviously, lower gas prices are great news for drivers, including summer vacationers traveling by?car. However, those going by plane may not be so lucky: while the cost of jet fuel is related to the cost of gasoline, the two don't always move in lockstep. (For example, jet fuel prices are ever so slightly?higher now than they were last week.)?

More importantly, though,?airlines?aren't always quick to reduce fares, even when their cost of doing business drops. Which, of course, is how they make moolah.

And there's even some bad news for road-trippers, because instability in the oil market often translates into instability in the broader?financial?markets. That kind of economic uncertainty takes its toll on your savings -- meaning that you might be able to afford that drive out to Yellowstone this year, but next year? Maybe not so much.

Our advice? Take advantage of the good situation and wring as much enjoyment as possible from this summer's vacation. And send pics!
