Guantanamo's last Western detainee returned to Canada

Saturday, September 29, 2012

In this photo of a sketch by courtroom artist Janet Hamlin, Canadian defendant Omar Khadr attends a hearing in the courthouse for the US military war crimes commission at the Camp Justice compound on Guantanamo Bay US Naval Base in Cuba, April 28, 2010.

The youngest prisoner and last Westerner held in the Guantanamo military base, Omar Khadr, was sent to finish his sentence in his native Canada today, the Canadian government said.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said that Khadr, who was a 15-year-old fighting in Afghanistan when captured in 2002, had been flown from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to a military base in Trenton, Ontario and transferred to the province's Millhaven maximum-security prison.

Khadr's case has been controversial both in Canada and abroad given his age when he was captured, the nature of his detention and hearing, and the reluctance of Canadian officials to accept his return.

"I am satisfied the Correctional Service of Canada can administer Omar Khadr's sentence in a manner which recognizes the serious nature of the crimes that he has committed and ensure the safety of Canadians is protected during incarceration," Toews said in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

A US war crimes tribunal in 2010 sentenced Khadr, now 26, to 40 years in prison, although he was expected to serve just a few more years under a deal that included his admission he was an al Qaeda conspirator who murdered a US soldier.

Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to charges that included murdering American Army medic Christopher Speer with a grenade in a 2002 firefight, conspiring with al Qaeda to commit terrorist acts, making roadside bombs to target US troops in Afghanistan, spying on American military convoys and providing material support for terrorism.

Khadr was the first person since World War Two to be prosecuted in a war crimes tribunal for acts committed as a juvenile. He was the youngest prisoner still at Guantanamo, but younger boys were previously held there.

Canadian-born Khadr was taken to Afghanistan by his father, a senior al Qaeda member who apprenticed the boy to a group of bomb makers who opened fire when US troops came to their compound. Khadr was captured in the firefight, during which he was blinded in one eye and shot twice in the back.

Comeback complete, Europe wins Ryder Cup

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Erasing some of their worst Ryder Cup memories, the Europeans wore the image of Seve Ballesteros on their sleeves and played their hearts out Sunday at Medinah to match the greatest comeback in history and head home with that precious gold trophy.

Europe got its payback for Brookline, when the Americans roared back from the same 10-6 deficit. This rally was even more remarkable, carried out before a raucous American crowd that began their chants of "USA!" some three hours before the first match got under way.

Jose Maria Olazabal squeezed his eyes and fought back tears when Kaymer holed a 6-foot par putt to beat Steve Stricker and give Europe the point it needed to keep the cup. This was the first Ryder Cup since Ballesteros, the soul of European golf in this event, died last May of a brain tumor. Olazabal wanted his team to wear navy blue, Seve's favorite color, and added a clever touch ? his iconic silhouette on the sleeves of their shirts.

"This one is for all of Europe," Olazabal said. "Seve will always be present with this team. He was a big factor for this event for the European side, and last night when we were having that meeting, I think the boys understood that believing was the most important thing. And I think they did."

Tiger Woods missed a 3?-foot par putt on the 18th hole, and then conceded a par to Francesco Molinari of about that length to halve their match. That extra half-point made it a clear-cut win for Europe, 14?-13?.

Woods and Stricker, the anchors in the lineup, didn't win a single match at Medinah.

Ian Poulter was the first to embrace Olazabal, which was only fitting.

It was Poulter who gave Europe hope Saturday evening when he made five straight birdies to turn a loss into a win and swing momentum in Europe's favor. Poulter was up to his fist-pumping, eye-bulging tricks again on the final day, winning the last two holes in his match against U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson.

And he had plenty of help. Europe's top five players in the lineup all won, including Rory McIlroy, who was lucky to be playing. McIlroy thought his match was at 12:25 p.m. ? it was listed in Eastern time, not Central ? and needed a police escort to get to the course with 10 minutes to spare. Then, he came up with key birdies to hand Keegan Bradley his first loss of the week.

The biggest match might have belonged to Justin Rose. He was on the verge of losing to Phil Mickelson when Rose holed a 12-foot par putt to halve the 16th, made a 35-foot birdie putt from the back of the 17th green to win the hole, and then closed out Mickelson with a 12-foot birdie on the last hole.

Six of the 12 matches went to the 18th hole on Sunday. The Americans won only one of them.

The Americans also rallied from a four-point deficit to win in 1999 at Brookline. This was different, though. The Americans won big in those early matches. At Medinah, so many of them could have gone either way.

It was so close, so tense, that either side could have won the Ryder Cup down to the very end.

Stricker made an 8-foot par putt on the 18th, and Kaymer faced a par putt from 6 feet to win the match. If he missed, the Americans would get a half-point, and Woods was leading 1-up over Molinari and in the middle of the 18th fairway.

Kaymer, a former No. 1 and major champion who has struggled all year, poured it in the middle and the celebration was on.

He could barely speak at this point, not so much from pure emotion but having to scream over the crowd behind him. Players were hugging and crying, and the small European contingent that had been drowned out all week was serenading themselves with what has become the theme song of the Ryder Cup.

"Ole, ole, ole, ole," they sang merrily, even as the teams prepared for the closing ceremony.

Europe now has won seven of the last nine Ryder Cups, and even more remarkable about this comeback is that they did it on the road.

Davis Love III became the first U.S. captain to sit every player at least once before Sunday, wanting them to be fresh for the decisive day. Instead, the Americans faltered at the end ? especially Jim Furyk and Stricker, two of his captain's picks.

"The plan worked the first two days," he said. "It just didn't work today."

The only U.S. points came from Dustin Johnson, who went 3-0 in this Ryder Cup, Zach Johnson and unheralded Jason Dufner.

"We're all kind of stunned," Love said. "We know what it feels like now from the '99 Ryder Cup. It's a little bit shocking. We were playing so well, we figured it didn't matter how we sent them out there. We got a couple of matches flipped there in the middle that cost us."

Love thought all along the Ryder Cup would be decided in the ninth match by Dufner. It was most appropriate that Europe won the cup thanks to Kaymer.

Kaymer gave German golf some redemption from Kiawah Island in 1991, when countryman Bernhard Langer missed a par putt from about the same length that allowed the Americans to win.

"It's a feeling I never had before," Kaymer said. "On Friday, I sat down with Bernhard and talked a little bit about the Ryder Cup because my attitude was not the right one. But now I know how important the Ryder Cup is."

Galaxy Nexus Gets a Taste of WebOS

ROMs

| Sep 29 2012 12:50 PM

If you hadn't heard earlier, WebOS is now fully open sourced. As promised back in January, HP has released Open WebOS 1.0 right on time and now the public can get it's hands on it. As we all are lovers of open source, this is pretty cool. While HP has only been able to get it working on computers, WebOS Ports has done something even cooler: they got it working on the GSM Galaxy Nexus.

At this point, this really can't be a daily driver. They have yet to get the hardware acceleration working, hence the lag seen in the video. Most phone functions (SMS, calling, etc) don't work, and you can only connect via WiFI. Keep in mind, however, that this is a major feat. According to one of the developers, morphis, this project has been in development for two months, but we can expect more usability coming in the next few weeks. Until that time, the team won't be posting a method to get it on your device.

This brings up a pretty good question. The Nexus line is beloved because of its openness, and there's little doubt that we'll see more functional ports appear down the line. Should the Android community welcome Open WebOS ports with open arms, or is it just going to be the annoying uncle who shows up smelling like a horse barn and whiskey and doesn't know when to go home?

Refs cheered at first NFL game following lockout

BALTIMORE (AP) ? No one is complaining that the refs cost the Cleveland Browns the game. That mere fact is a major victory for the NFL and the seven-man crew led by referee Gene Steratore, who brought official harmony back to the nation's most popular league.

Cheered from the moment they walked onto the field, the men in stripes ran a smooth and efficient game Thursday night as the NFL's lockout of officials came to an end with the Baltimore Ravens' 23-16 win over the Browns.

"To just be applauded by 50,000 people prior to anything happening, it was something that kind of chokes you up," Steratore said. "It was a very special feeling."

Sure, there were calls that made both sides unhappy. Browns coach Pat Shurmur drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for arguing an intentional grounding call, and Ravens left tackle Michael Oher could be heard raising all kinds of beef about a holding call.

But, overall, the officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace ? not to mention the inconsistent calls ? that had marred the three weeks of games with replacement officials.

"It was great to have those guys back," Ravens running back Ray Rice said. "It looked like they knew what they were doing."

An agreement to end the lockout was reached late Wednesday after marathon negotiations, two days after a "Monday Night Football" finish brought debate over the use of the replacements to a fevered pitch nationwide.

That game ended when a 24-yard desperation pass on the last play was ruled a touchdown ? even though replays appeared to show it should have been an interception ? giving the Seattle Seahawks a disputed 14-12 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

The stage was set for something eerily similar Thursday. A fourth-down unnecessary roughness penalty on Baltimore's Paul Kruger ? a good call, given the way he shoved Cleveland's Joe Thomas after the whistle ? gave the Browns one final play from the 18-yard line.

But Brandon Weeden's 18-yard pass sailed high as time expired. No controversial ending this time.

"I thought they handled (the game) great," Cleveland coach Pat Shurmur said. "I had all the confidence in the world that this was going to be officiated in the right way."

The newfound love for the refs was evident all evening.

About an hour before kickoff, they made their first appearance on the field and heard cheers from the early arrivals. A few minutes later, Steratore was shaking hands with Shurmur near midfield and getting a hug from Ravens face-of-the-franchise Ray Lewis at the 30-yard line.

Later, when the crew returned, they received a standing ovation and doffed their caps to the crowd. One fan held up a sign that read: "Finally! We get to yell at real refs! Welcome back!"

"It was very chaotic with the replacement refs," said Karen Riley, a 44-year-old fan wearing a Rice jersey. "They couldn't control the players on either side. There were bad calls, constantly, and in some cases refs making different calls at the same time."

When Steratore then turned on his microphone to greet the captains for the pre-game coin toss, the crowd heard him say: "Good evening, men. It's good to be back."

The stadium erupted in a roar.

"You know we always pride ourselves in being a face without a name," Steratore, a 10-year league veteran, told The Associated Press about an hour before kickoff. "This will be a little different, but I don't expect it to last too long. And that's the goal ? is that we can let them get through that portion of this. It's happy to be back, it's happy to be appreciated. But then as soon as the game starts, it's happy to disappear again and let the entertainers entertain."

The deal to end the lockout is only tentative ? it must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members in a vote scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Dallas ? but both sides nevertheless went forward with the plan to have the regulars back for Thursday's game.

So Steratore hustled to Baltimore, making the 3?-hour drive Thursday morning from his home in the Pittsburgh area. He's usually in place the day before a game, but none of his regular pregame meetings had to be changed because the Browns-Ravens game was at night.

"We've had a few weeks to actually realize that this was the first September that I was home for multiple Saturdays and Sundays for almost 30 years of my life, continuously. ... It just feels completely different," Steratore said. "To be away from something that is involved with this level of professional sport, just to come back and feel that again, it doesn't take long to realize why you were missing it as much as you were missing it."

Steratore, who is a basketball official in the Big East Conference among others, also was fully aware he would be jeered the first time his crew made a questionable call ? just like always.

"Without a question," he said. "I've been yelled at by my own children many times, so this won't be any different."

Sure enough, the same fans that cheered the coin toss let out a full chorus of boos when line judge Jeff Seeman tossed his yellow flag some 20 yards to whistle Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard for a personal foul in the third quarter. Replays showed it was a good call: Pollard led with his helmet to make contact with a defenseless receiver, costing the Ravens 15 yards in a drive that led to a field goal for the Browns.

Steratore's crew nearly made a misstep in the first quarter, incorrectly spotting the ball by 2 yards after a misapplication of the rules following a holding call on the Browns. But two members of the crew caught the mistake and notified the referee before the next snap. A brief huddle ensued, and the ball was moved to its correct spot.

The crew made it clear it wouldn't tolerate the extra shoving and yelling after the whistle that had been frequently permitted by the replacements. Offsetting personal fouls were called on Cleveland's Johnson Bademosi and Baltimore's James Ihedigbo for extracurricular roughness on a punt return in the first quarter.

Then there was Shurmur's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Replays appeared to validate the grounding call he was trying to contest, and the coach took responsibility for his loss of temper.

"I can't do that," Shurmur said. "It's an emotional game, and I got to make sure I keep my emotions in check."

There were 18 penalties called in the game, mostly the familiar calls for holding and false start. There were two rare ? and indisputable ? whistles for fair catch interference on punt returns, and a hands-to-the-face call on Baltimore's Kelechi Osemele was so obvious that it drew three flags.

The league's new agreement with the officials runs for eight years. Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged the ending of the Seahawks-Packers game "may have pushed the parties further along" in the talks.

"Obviously when you go through something like this it is painful for everybody," Goodell said. "Most importantly, it is painful for our fans. We are sorry to have to put our fans through that, but it is something that in the short term you sometimes have to do to make sure you get the right kind of deal for the long term and make sure you continue to grow the game."

The dispute even made its way to the campaign trail, with President Barack Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, calling Thursday "a great day for America."

"The president's very pleased that the two sides have come together," Carney said.

Romney: A win in Pennsylvania would be a 'shock'

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney campaigned Friday on an uphill battle to win Pennsylvania, acknowledging it would be a "shock" if he were able to overcome President Barack Obama's lead in the state.

Facing a narrowing path to electoral victory, Romney courted donors at Philadelphia's exclusive Union League Club before a midday rally in suburban Wayne. The state has not supported a Republican presidential candidate in nearly a quarter-century and his campaign is not running any television ads in Pennsylvania.

"We really would shock people if early in the evening of Nov. 6 it looked like Pennsylvania was going to come our way and actually did come our way. That can happen," Romney told about 200 donors who paid as much as $50,000 to attend his morning fundraiser.

He changed to a more optimistic tune later in a speech before a larger crowd at Valley Forge Military Academy and College.

"The Obama campaign thinks Pennsylvania is in their pocket, they don't need to worry about it," Romney said to shouted objections from the crowd. "You're right and they're wrong ? we're going to win Pennsylvania. We're going to take the White House."

Aides privately concede Obama has the advantage in Pennsylvania and suggested Romney's visit ? his first to the state in more than two months ? was largely designed to raise the money needed to narrow Obama's edge in more competitive states. The campaign would not say how much it raised at the event, but Romney brought in $5 million at a Washington gathering Thursday and is expected to raise another $7 million at a Boston fundraiser later Friday.

"My priority is job creation and growing incomes," he told the donors in Philadelphia. "My priority is not trying to punish people who have been successful."

Obama also will focus on raising cash Friday at three fundraising events in Washington.

He was set to deliver remarks at a finance event at the Capital Hilton, where tickets start at $250 but go as high as $10,000 per couple. Obama planned to attend a smaller fundraiser at a private residence before returning to the Capitol Hilton for a third event.

Both candidates worked statesmanship into their politicking Friday with separate telephone calls to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Romney criticized Obama for not meeting with Netanyahu this week during his visit to the United Nations, where the prime minister warned the world only has until next summer to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb. Aides to both candidates did not mention that dire declaration in their reports of the calls.

Romney told the crowd at Valley Forge that he didn't know how any student at the school could support Obama. He said the president was cutting military spending while job opportunities for college graduates have decreased.

"On both fronts this president's policies have not worked for this country's young people," Romney said.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith objected to Romney's criticism, since Republicans in Congress, including Romney running mate Paul Ryan, overwhelmingly backed defense spending reductions when they voted for deficit-cutting legislation last year.

"In next week's debate, facts will matter, and Mitt Romney simply failed to meet the bar of honesty today," Smith said in a statement.

Obama and Romney are scheduled to face off Wednesday in Denver for the first of three debates, which may represent the challenger's best remaining opportunity to change the trajectory of his campaign. Romney has struggled through a series of perceived missteps in recent weeks amid signs that confidence in the nation's economy is on the rise.

Obama met with advisers Friday at Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington to prepare for the debates before heading Sunday to Nevada to hold practice sessions. His campaign released a political memo on Friday saying it expects Romney "to be a prepared, disciplined and aggressive debater."

However, it said that while the president would be laying out his vision for the coming years, Romney has "signaled that he will come to indict the president for the fact that the economy has not fully recovered from the collapse of 2008."

The Obama memo and an accompanying Web video also aim to debunk claims by Romney that the president has mischaracterized the Republican's positions on the auto industry bailout, abortion and raising taxes on wage earners to cover tax cuts for multimillionaires.

With economic concerns paramount for voters, Obama and Romney continue to jab over who would best protect American manufacturing workers against unfair trade and currency practices by China. In an interview with the Plain Dealer newspaper of Cleveland, Obama said the United States must push hard but "not go out of our way to embarrass" China to get results.

"There's a strong nationalist sentiment inside of China, and they've got their own economic pressures," Obama told the newspaper during a campaign visit this week. "So we're not interested in triggering an all-out trade war that would damage both economies. What we're interested in is making sure they're treating our workers fairly, and that's what we've delivered on."

Obama on Friday used his presidential authority to block a Chinese company from owning four wind farm projects near a Navy base in Oregon, citing national security risks. It was the first time in 22 years that a U.S. president blocked such a foreign business deal.

Abbott misstated credentials of spinoff CEO Gonzalez

(Reuters) - Abbott Laboratories for years misstated that the executive handpicked to head its pending pharmaceutical spinoff held both bachelor's and master's degrees, but on Thursday called the misinformation "an administrative error."

Richard Gonzalez, Abbott's head of global pharmaceuticals who last October was named as the future chief executive of AbbVie once the company splits its drugs and medical devices businesses, did not receive degrees from the University of Houston or the University of Miami as had been stated in his company biography.

Crain's Chicago Healthcare first reported the discrepancy on Thursday, saying Abbott regulatory filings from 2002 through 2007 said Gonzalez had a bachelor's degree from Houston and a master's from Miami, both in biochemistry.

The company confirmed that Gonzalez did not complete his college education or receive a college degree.

Abbott has since changed the educational credits in Gonzalez's biography on its website, which now says he was a research biochemist at the University of Miami School of Medicine and attended the University of Houston, majoring in biochemistry.

"It was an administrative error when the bio was written many years ago. It wasn't identified right away," Abbott spokeswoman Melisa Brotz said in a telephone interview.

"The information on the website is correct. When we became aware of it we corrected it promptly," Brotz said, adding that the changes were made "quite a while ago."

The company is firmly standing behind Gonzalez, and said there was no deliberate attempt to overstate his educational credentials.

"There is no issue with respect to Mr. Gonzalez's educational background or his ability to lead AbbVie as evidenced by his distinguished 30-year career in which he has reached the highest levels of the company," Brotz said.

Abbott Chief Executive Miles White selected the 58-year-old Gonzalez to head up the new company after the spinoff, which is set for January 1.

White will remain in charge of Abbott, which will retain the medical devices, diagnostics, nutritionals and branded generics businesses. AbbVie, with Gonzalez at the helm, will be a pharmaceutical company with nearly $18 billion in annual revenue, nearly half coming from the blockbuster rheumatoid arthritis drug Humira.

HBT: Mets must extend Wright or Dickey's gone

When it comes to what R.A. Dickey is going to do once his contract is up with the Mets, he says he views he and David Wright as something of a package deal for the Mets:

?If I don?t see them pursuing David hard,? Dickey said, ?I think it would be a message to everybody that they?re content to spend the next five or six years rebuilding this organization. Rather than trying to be competitive, and trying to rebuild it at the same time.

?I think you can do both. I think (doing both is) what they want to do.

?But if you see them not really pursue him hard, that?s the message that I get. Unless they trade him and get multiple, big-league pieces back.?

Both Dickey and Wright have team options through 2013 and, clearly, the Mets are going to want to work on Wright first. ?The Mets have made every indication that they?re doing to try to lock up Wright. ?I think the bigger question for Dickey is whether he can come close to matching his 2012 season next year. ?Because if he, as many knuckleballers have in the past, starts to get a bit erratic out there, it would probably give a lot of team?s pause about signing him to a significant deal.

With fall in full swing, it?s getting to be kale-eating season, but that doesn?t mean you?re doomed to plates of over-cooked bitter greens. Try this bright, fresh, and lemony raw kale salad and you may just be wishing it was kale season all the time. The acid in the lemon juice ?cooks? the kale, leaving it tender, while the chile flakes, pecorino cheese, and garlicky olive oil are there to make you (and your guests!) go back for seconds.

Recipe: Kale Salad with Pecorino and Chile Flakes

Kale Salad with Pecorino and Chile Flakes

Adapted slightly from?In The Kitchen with a Good Appetite. ?Serves 2 as a side.?

What You?ll Need:

20 large leaves of tuscan kale (aka cavolo nero, or the flat-leafed kind)
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 clove garlic
1/2 a lemon, juiced
1/4 cup grated pecorino romano cheese
1 slice good quality sourdough bread
1 pinch red chile flakes

What to Do:?

  1. Toast the slice of bread until golden brown, then crush into breadcrumbs using a food processor or crumbling with your hands. Set aside.
  2. Wash and dry the kale leaves. Cut out the center rib and discard. Slice the leaves into thin ribbons and place in a medium bowl.
  3. In a mortar and pestle (or food processor), blend the garlic and olive oil until the garlic is fully smashed. Add the lemon juice, cheese, and chile flakes, and season to taste with salt if needed.
  4. Pour the dressing over the kale, and toss to fully coat the leaves with the dressing.
  5. Top each serving of salad with some of the toasted breadcrumbs and some more grated cheese.
  6. Serve within an hour after dressing it to avoid wilting leaves!

More than 100 homemade gift ideas that don't suck

Not all homemade holiday gifts are that great. While there are almost always some benefits to giving homemade gifts, there are also downsides to giving poorly thought out gifts, such as?

  • People won?t use them ? thus wasting resources.
  • Your time could be better spent.
  • Your money could be better spent.
  • Good homemade gifts inspire people to create their own homemade gifts, bad ones, not so much.

The above said, first take a look at?10 tips for making the best homemade holiday gifts, then consider one of the gifts below.

Homemade memory game

7 homemade gifts I?ve given that have actually gone over well?

I?ve made tons of homemade gifts over the years. Some good, some better left unmentioned, but the ones below have gone over well.

1 -?Homemade memory game?- This game went over well with the kids who got them. Plus, it was a nice project for my son Cedar, who was 10 at the time, so if you?re looking for a gift your child can help with, this is a good one. Here?s a fun shapes and tactile version.

2 -??52 Reasons I Love You? Cards?- I made one of these homemade decks for a friend?s birthday gift and Cedar made one for his dad for Father?s day. It was a smashing success in both cases. It?s time intensive, but fun and worth it. Plus, it forces you to think positively. Note, Cedar made a smaller deck, called ?10 reasons I love you? which is smart if a kid is making this project, because 52 cards is a lot of work.

Snowman covered cherries

3 ? Homemade organic chocolate covered cherries ? I made these one year and while they were harder than I thought, everyone LOVED them. Never underestimate the power of chocolate + cherries. Just an FYI though ? packaging was kind of a nightmare. I don?t think I?ve posted my recipe here yet, so here?s a good one. By the way, I haven?t made snowman covered cherries?from The Kid?s Fun Review, but if I did this gift project again, I would because they?re ADORABLE (as shown above). Lastly, you have to see these chocolate mice.

4 -?Homemade organic sugar scrub?- Homemade sugar scrub is both the best homemade gift I?ve ever?received?and given. People love fancy bath?products? and this one is so easy that your gift making is done in a flash. You can also make salt scrub and you can personalize the scents. For Christmas, you may want to try this cinnamon scrub?or candy cane bath salts.

Homemade calender for kids

5 ? Homemade calender for kids?- Last year my friend and I made calenders for our kids. It took a bit of time, but was an inexpensive gift and fun too. Also, the kids really liked them. You can print out your own calender template on the computer or buy a very?inexpensive?calender?at the store and go nuts decorating (what I did).??I suggest this gift for kids only, because they?re not super design-picky, whereas adults have VERY specific ideas when it comes to what hangs on their wall. See the homemade calender tutorial (coming soon).

6 ? Homemade clock?- I made a homemade wooden clock for a friend a long time ago and she?s had it hanging up for 12 years now. Mine was fancy ? I painted it full of stars and celestial colors. This is a good project if you?re a decent painter. If you?re not a decent painter, go with a solid color scheme or use a unique recycled item to make your clock. To make a homemade clock, head to your nearest craft store (unless you own a wood shop) get a basic clock front plus the back?mechanical?workings.?See this guide to homemade clocks. You can also try a homemade literary clock.

Homemade music CD

7 ? Homemade music CD ? This is a great stocking stuffer for kids and adults. If you want to give a CD as a main gift, say for a co-worker or ?pal, I suggest placing it in a little gift bag with some candy to amp it up a bit. I usually take the time to decorate the case too (as shown above) ? which is way nicer than just writing down the songs in a row.

100+ other spectacular homemade gift ideas?

Remember, even if a gift looks like an excellent idea, it?s only great if you can pull it off, so stick with a gift you can manage. Also, because not all homemade gifts start out eco-friendly, make sure to switch it up to make projects greener. For example?

  • Switch out?conventional?food and body care?ingredients?for organic.
  • Reuse containers and packaging vs. buying new when possible.
  • Use recycled and non-toxic arts and crafts supplies.
  • Look for supplies for homemade gifts at thrift stores or garage sales before buying new supplies.

Arrest of Google Brazil head stirs debate over Web

Google Inc.'s head of operations in Brazil was detained by the country's federal police Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012 after the company failed to heed a judge's order to take down YouTube videos that the court ruled violate Brazilian electoral law. The detention came as another court ordered YouTube to remove clips of an anti-Islam film that has been blamed for deadly protests by Muslims around the globe, both joining a spate of court-ordered content-removal cases against Google's video-sharing website in Brazil. In this Nov. 22, 2011 photo, Google executive Fabio Jose Silva Coelho poses for a portrait in Sao Paulo, Brazil. (AP) ? The arrest of a top Google executive is reviving a debate about Brazilian laws that hold services such as YouTube responsible for the videos posted on them, making the country a hotbed of attempts to stifle digital content.

Legal experts said Thursday that Google violated a judge's order to take down videos on its YouTube subsidiary that target Brazilian political candidates ? and that the judge was completely within the law in issuing the arrest warrant.

But they said the arrest of Fabio Jose Silva Coelho, the head of Google Inc.'s Brazil operations, underscores the need to modernize laws that treat offensive material on the Internet like material that is carried by newspapers, television and radio, holding platforms such as Google responsible for user-provided content.

Coelho was released shortly after his arrest Wednesday and agreed to appear before a court at an as-yet undetermined time.

"Our laws trying to govern the Internet are outdated," said Jose Guilherme Zagallo, head of the Brazilian bar association's commission focusing on information technology law. "It's not clear who is responsible for content, and that creates uncertainty for Internet companies, users and judges, who are left to interpret laws not written for the Internet."

Brazil's strict electoral laws limit what critics can say on television, radio and the Internet about candidates for office. On several occasions in recent years, media outlets have faced stiff fines for breaking the laws, but few if any officials were arrested.

Google's alleged infractions, however, are more widespread, simply because of its omnipresence. Ahead of municipal elections in Brazil next month, Google has received requests in more than 20 states to remove videos that allegedly violate those restrictions.

Google has faced a landslide of content-removal requests around the globe, including in the U.S., but Brazil makes more requests than any other nation, according to the company's summary of all the demands. Most such demands relate to legitimate attempts to enforce laws on issues ranging from personal privacy to hate speech.

Brazilian government agencies alone submitted a total of 194 content-removal requests during the final half of last year, according to a summary released by Google in June. Running just behind that was the United States, where police, prosecutors, courts and other government agencies submitted 187 requests to remove content over the same period.

Google says it complied fully or partially with 54 percent of Brazilian removal requests in the last half of 2011. Most requests involved YouTube and charges of defamation. Other requests involved the social networking site Orkut and requests to remove illegal content, such as child pornography.

Separately this week, another Brazilian court ordered YouTube to remove clips of an anti-Islam film that has been blamed for deadly protests by Muslims around the globe. Google is now selectively blocking the video clips in countries that include Libya and Egypt. Google has said it made the decision to block the video in such places due to "the sensitive situations" there.

Brazil's legal action targeting a Google executive, while rare, is not unprecedented. In 2010 in Italy, a judge held three Google executives criminally responsible for an online video of an autistic teenager being bullied. The executives were given six-month suspended sentences.

A judge in Mato Grosso do Sul state ordered Coelho arrested because the company had not removed YouTube videos making incendiary comments about an alleged paternity suit aimed at Alcides Bernal, who is running for mayor of the city of Campo Grande.

Google said it was appealing the decision. "Being a platform, Google is not responsible for the content posted on its site," the company said in a statement. Requests for further comment were not answered by Google on Thursday.

Bruno Magrani, a researcher at the Center for Technology and Society at Rio de Janeiro's Getulio Vargas Foundation, said that unlike the United States and some other countries, Brazil doesn't have legal protections for online service providers that host content provided by third parties.

There is pending legislation that would provide some protection for intermediaries such as Google. Earlier this month the company joined Facebook and online retail site MercadoLivre in sending an open letter supporting the passage of the law, called Marco Civil.

"Marco Civil establishes that providers of Internet applications are not responsible for content published by users," the letter says. "Various economic, social and legislative factors justify not holding providers responsible; without that protection, the use of online applications and platforms would be limited, which would be a loss to users."

While the measure would create some protections, it would not resolve the legal tangle facing Google's Coelho or prevent the situation from recurring, Magrani said.

The Marco Civil is general legislation, and could still be trumped by more specific electoral laws. Those laws treat an Internet platform such as Google as if it were a newspaper or a television station, holding it responsible for its content.

"It's a very serious situation," Magrani said. "Brazil needs to change its electoral law to accommodate the nature and the characteristics of the Internet. The Internet cannot be treated in the same way as traditional media."

First, he said, an Internet company cannot evaluate all the content it carries in the same way a newspaper or television channel can because of the sheer volume.

Second, "the Internet has no editor. And we don't want an editor," Magrani said.

He said asking a company to determine what users can upload is a dangerous step that could undermine freedom of information.

"If we continue threatening to jail heads of companies who don't verify content before it goes on the Internet, we will end up living in a state of censorship," he said. "If the company is running a high risk, it'll start posting less and less material. ... If companies start to feel afraid of retaliation, they'll start censoring."

The lack of protections for Internet platforms can also have a chilling effect on the development of small- and medium-size high-tech companies in Brazil that don't have the resources of big companies like Google, Magrani said.

The federal government is investing heavily to promote the tech sector, but Brazilian legislators need to diminish legal risks for startups, he said.

Maria Clara Garcaz, a 20-year-old university student in Rio de Janeiro, expressed worries about the court action.

"It's like we live in a silent, disguised dictatorship. When we had our real dictatorship, at least you knew for certain what you could and couldn't say," Garcaz said. "Political speech can be censored at any time and it's moving into the Internet, exactly where people speak out."

5 Questions to Ask Yourself If your Online Business isn't making ...

Many set out with the assumption that setting up an online business is affordable, easier than running an actual business premises, and once the site is live, the hard work is over. However in reality, the cost of running and online business and getting it set up to begin with can be hugely costly depending on the type of business you run. The hidden costs include photography, SEO, web design and development, and model photography.

If you do take the plunge, you can expect hard work, months/years of testing and tweaking and you will have to continually update your website.

If you find your website is making you very little return, it is time to stop and investigate what exactly if going on.

Every time you explore your website, you must imagine you are visiting it for the first time and that you don?t know the products. In your honest opinion is it easy to find your way around the site? Can you find the delivery information easily or is it hidden away? Do you have a returns section so that doubtful customers have their questions answered?

It is essential you cover any and all potential questions. In a shop customers can wander over to the retail assistant and easily gain an answer. With an online shop, there is no one to ask, and emails take time, and it is likely your customer will go elsewhere if they can?t find the answer to their questions.

Not only that, you must make it obvious where they will find this information on your site. Ambiguously named menus and poor layout leads to frustration and customer drop offs. People have very little spare time to give so make sure you make it easy to get around your website with easy menus, well labelled, and well categorized so that it makes sense.

If you aren?t sure if your site is clear enough, look into user testing. A user tester can be set challenges by you, and as they complete their challenge, they will film their screen and narrate as they navigate around your site so you can understand if they are having trouble, or have some better suggestions. Shorter days and cooler nights are not just a sign of the onset of fall, but they also generally foretell the end of the summer show and shine season as well.

And that was the case on Tuesday night (Sept. 25) when the Cherryhill Village Cruizers wrapped up the season with their final show of the year at the Cherryhill Mall.

Since early June, on average, about 100 classic cars and their owners have made the trip from as far away as Strathroy and Ingersoll to the mall on Oxford Street every Tuesday night to join with fellow automotive enthusiasts.

Showing everything from classic originals from the early 1900s, 60s muscle cars and the latest models off the assembly line, there has been a little bit of everything to tickle the fancy of most any car buff each night.

As a show of thanks to the community that has come out and supported them all summer, the Cherryhill Village Cruizers made donations of more than $1,500 to each of two local charities ? Mission Services London and to Jesse?s Journey ? with money that was raised over the course of the summer through raffles and by donation.

Why the Health Care Tax Credit Eludes Many Small Businesses ...

The Agenda

How small-business issues are shaping politics and policy.

The Agenda has now profiled three small businesses that are struggling in different ways with providing health insurance to employees. The companies are very different ? they trade in very different parts of the economy, and couldn?t be located much further apart?geographically ? but they do have one thing in common: Though all three have fewer than 25 employees, not one has qualified for the tax credit in the Affordable Care Act that was intended to help small businesses pay for health insurance. Indeed, the credit is one element of the controversial health law that has already fallen short of expectations.

Estimates of the number of businesses eligible to take the tax credit have ranged from 1.4 million to 4 million companies, but in May, the Government Accountability Office reported that only 170,300 firms actually claimed the credit in 2010. Of these, only a small fraction, 17 percent, were able to claim the whole credit.

For eligible companies, the credit effectively refunds 35 percent of health insurance expenses between 2010 and 2013.* After 2014, the credit increases to 50 percent and is available for any two consecutive years. The credit is fully available to companies with 10 or fewer full-time employees and average wages below $25,000. It phases out as the number of employees rises to 25 and wages grow to $50,000. In 2009, there were about 4.6 million companies with fewer than 10 employees, according to the Census Bureau, and 5.7 million with fewer than 100.

The credit was aimed squarely at the smallest companies, which rarely offer health insurance to employees. However, as we reported two weeks ago, it appears not to have persuaded very many to start offering insurance. The most recent study of employer health insurance from the Kaiser Family Foundation found that just half of all companies with fewer than 10 employees offered insurance, a share that has not moved much since 2005.

So why has the credit fallen short of expectations? The G.A.O. concluded that the credit was too small to sway business owners. Moreover, it said, claiming the credit is a task so complicated as to discourage many companies from trying. Companies have to determine the number of hours each employee worked in the year, as well as compile information about their insurance premiums. ?Small-business owners generally do not want to spend the time or money to gather the necessary information to calculate the credit, given that the credit will likely be insubstantial,? the report said, citing conversations with tax preparers. ?Tax preparers told us it could take their clients from two to eight hours or possibly longer to gather the necessary information to calculate the credit and that the tax preparers spent, in general, three to five hours calculating the credit.?

The G.A.O. report hints at the complexity with this delicious example:

On its Web site, I.R.S. tried to reduce the burden on taxpayers by offering ?3 Simple Steps? as a screening tool to help taxpayers determine whether they might be eligible for the credit. However, to calculate the actual dollars that can be claimed, the three steps become 15 calculations, 11 of which are based on seven worksheets, some of which request multiple columns of information.

It may be tempting to hold the Internal Revenue Service responsible for whatever burden accompanies the tax credit, but in this case, the complexity is written directly into the law. It turns out that legislators wrote the provision in a way that makes it appear more generous than it really is. Many businesses with both fewer than 25 employees and average wages below $50,000 are in fact unable to claim the credit.

Under the law, once such a business has calculated its potential credit, it is required to reduce the credit first to account for any excess employees over 10 and then separately reduce the potential credit to account for any excess average wages paid over $25,000. For many companies, the two reductions exceed the potential credit itself ? meaning the business gets no credit.

That?s what happened to Carrie Van Dyck, who along with her husband owns the Herbfarm Restaurant outside of Seattle. Excluding its owners, the Herbfarm, which we profiled in June, employed the equivalent of about 21 or 22 full-time staff members, who were paid an average wage of about $35,000 ? a few thousand dollars over the credit?s threshold for 21 employees. The result surprised Ms. Van Dyck, she said recently by e-mail, because ?it would seem that we are a pretty typical small, mom-and-pop type business that this should apply to.?

Of course, by making the credit less generous, the senators who wrote the law made it less expensive to the United States Treasury. Now it is apparent that credit will be even cheaper than planned: initially it was expected to cost the Treasury $2 billion in 2010; instead it cost the government only a quarter of that.

The law also excludes owners and owners? families from counting toward the credit, which can cut both ways. On the one hand, owners don?t count as employees and their salaries are excluded from the annual wages, exclusions that could make some companies eligible for a bigger credit than they might otherwise have gotten. On the other hand, premiums paid for the owners? and their families? insurance aren?t eligible for the credit, which for some companies, as You?re The Boss commenter JAB recently noted, ?greatly reduces the incentive to provide coverage for employees.?

The White House has said that the number of businesses claiming the credit for 2011 has grown to at least 360,000, but that is still well below even the smallest estimate of eligible businesses. Some advocates for the law say that more businesses will take advantage of the credit in 2014, when it grows to 50 percent, especially if the new insurance exchanges make it easier and cheaper for small companies to offer insurance.

The Obama administration has proposed making more businesses eligible for the credit, in part by starting phase-outs at higher thresholds, and also by changing the way it is calculated so that every business within the limits, such as the Herbfarm Restaurant, can take some amount of credit.

But judging from the comments of Representative Sam Graves, chairman of the House Small Business Committee, the initiative is unlikely to pass a Republican-controlled House anytime soon. ?This tax credit has already largely failed to attract small-business owners, and expanding it will not make the president?s health care law affordable,? the Missouri Republican said in a statement. ?For small employers that do not offer health insurance, tax incentives are unlikely to cause many of them to choose a massive new expense they just cannot afford in the first place.? It was Mr. Graves who sought the G.A.O. report.

Of course, a business denied a credit has not been made worse off by the 2010 health law. But the law surely has raised and dashed a lot of hopes, and these are the early days ? the sweeping changes that are the law?s hallmark don?t come until 2014.
