Hiring managers still utilize word of mouth, even online

When it comes to finding employment, there are many avenues that job seekers can take to submit their resumes and cover letters to hiring managers. Over the years, these have evolved to be much more technologically based, with job board sites and career pages on company websites. But, according to an article from BusinessWeek, the best way may not be the most technologically advanced.

In fact, Adam Cobb, professor of management at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania,? told the source, ?The best way to get a job now is the same as in the 70s and the 80s ? word of mouth.?

While technological advancements include open job sites such as Craigslist and LinkedIn that have helped applicants cast a wide net of resumes and cover letters, they haven?t done much for getting them a foot in the door. What will, though, is a recommendation or a personal assessment.

According to the source, most hires come through informal channels ? friends, families or previous coworkers ? rather than avenues designated to find employment. Oftentimes, a way to break down this barrier is to issue the help of a recruitment agency. These agencies are often specialized ? i.e. some are specifically medical staffing agencies while others may only do accounting recruiting ? but provide an excellent way to gain access to employers by using a direct middleman.

Companies will hire these recruiters as a means to find talent, by doing so they trust their judgement will bring them the right candidates. Therefore, these agencies are an great way to create the ?word-of-mouth? reference employers look for rather than hoping for the best over the internet.
