Ghana president dies unexpectedly

ACCRA?-- Ghana's President John Atta Mills has died unexpectedly, a presidential statement said, and an aide said his death occurred on Tuesday after he took ill on Monday night.

The death of the president of the world's No. 2 cocoa grower comes months before Mills was due to stand for re-election at the helm of the West African country that posted double-digit growth in 2011 and has been praised for its strong democracy in a turbulent region.

Vice President John Dramani Mahama was scheduled to be sworn in later Tuesday. According to the country's constitution, Mahama will complete Mills' term that was due to end with elections in December.

"It is with a heavy heart ... that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana," a statement sent to Reuters by the president's office said.

It said that Mills, 68, died a few hours after being taken ill but no further details were given.

A presidential aide, who asked not to be named, said the president had complained of pains on Monday evening and died early on Tuesday afternoon when his condition worsened.

Mills, who oversaw the start of oil production in Ghana, returned from medical checks in the United States several weeks ago.

The BBC reported he had recently suffered from throat cancer.

Mills was?married to Ernestina Naadu Mills, an educator, and has a son, Sam Kofi Atta Mills, according to his official online profile.

In March,?President Barack Obama received the Ghanaian president in the Oval Office and praised him and his country as "a good-news story" in Africa.

On Tuesday, the U.S. State Department said it "learned with sadness" about Mills' death.

"Our thoughts go to his family and to the people of Ghana, who have lost a beloved leader," said Victoria Nuland, State Department spokeswoman.

Ghana's election commission said December's presidential and parliamentary elections would go ahead as planned.

"The election calendar remains unchanged - it's purely a party matter," election chief Kwadwo Afari-Gyan told Reuters, explaining that it was up to the ruling National Democratic Congress to find a candidate to replace Mills.

Ghana has seen democratic elections decide its leadership no fewer than four times since the last military coup in 1981, a rare feat in a region where power is still just as often determined by the bullet as by the ballot.

Neighbor Ivory Coast has not been so peaceful, suffering months of violence last year after a disputed election. Near-neighbors Liberia and Sierra Leone suffered years of war.

A glance at Ghana's recent history:

July 1960:?Kwame Nkrumah becomes president of the Republic of Ghana, months after a republican constitution is ratified by a referendum. Nkrumah is overthrown after a military coup in February 1966.

Limann is also overthrown in coup in 1981, again led by Rawlings, after two years of weak economic policies. Rawlings is elected president in November 1992.

June 1994:?Leaders of Ghana's warring northern tribes sign a peace accord after fighting erupted in the north in February, pitting landless Konkombas against three allied tribes. Independent sources estimated up to 5,000 people were killed by mid-April.

January 2001:?Former opposition leader John Kufuor is sworn in as president after Rawlings served the two elected terms he was allowed.

June 2007:?London-based Tullow Oil Plc says it has found up to 600 million barrels of oil offshore.

January 2009:?Electoral Commission declares John Atta Mills winner after he defeated Nana Akufo-Addo of the ruling New Patriotic Party in run off presidential elections.

July 2009:?Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama assures Africa it will not be sidelined from world affairs and hails democratic Ghana as a model for other African countries.

December 2010:Mills opens the valves in a ceremony at a floating oil platform off the country's Atlantic coast. Initial production of around 120,000 bpd will rank Ghana as sub-Saharan Africa's seventh largest producer.

July 2011:?Mills is chosen as ruling National Democratic Congress party's candidate for the 2012 presidential election, defeating Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, wife of the former president.

December 2011:?Ghana says it has exported 23.5 million barrels of crude oil from the Jubilee oilfield in its first year of production. Tullow Oil is the lead company of the consortium operating the Jubilee field.

July 24, 2012:?Mills dies in office.

In the Shoalhaven region of the NSW South Coast, there?s a health and fitness revolution underway! The Waminda Aboriginal Women?s Health and Wellbeing Program promotes healthy eating and increased physical activity for Aboriginal women, and the results are speaking for themselves with almost 60kg lost overall and great improvements in fitness and flexibility!

The program includes:? a comprehensive and intensive tobacco cessation program, healthy wellbeing camps, support for the community garden, and localised health promotion and health education days. We sat down for a chat with Willow Firth, one of Waminda?s Project Coordinators, to find out more about the project.

Firstly, how did you find yourself working on the Program?

I completed a Bachelor of Applied Science -Sports 12 years ago but, after doing practical stints at the Australian Institute of Sport, I decided I didn?t want to work in the elite athlete field and travelled around Australia in a campervan for 18 months.

I ended up in Queensland working in a Sports Injuries clinic and completed a diploma in remedial massage and Acupuncture. From there I became self-employed therapist specialising in musculoskeletal disorders.

I fortuitously met Faye Worner, the CEO of Waminda, playing hockey. She asked if I would like to come and do a few hours with the organisation -we ran the 10week pilot program successfully and from there it has become a full time job.? It is an absolute privilege working with these women in helping them to achieve their goals and live a happier, healthier life.

So, tell us what the project is all about?

Our program is about having fun whilst learning about healthy lifestyle. We laugh together, exercise together, and try new foods and activities together. We support each other in a safe, culturally appropriate environment to achieve our own goals.

What impact is the program having in your community?

The goal of the program is to provide women with the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive and holistic healthy lifestyle program that incorporates increasing access to physical activity and healthy eating education sessions. Ultimately, we are hoping to change the high rate of chronic disease in our community.

How did you choose the particular focus of your project? Was there a demonstrated need in your community?

Absolutely. We did a 10 week pilot program in three communities. From that initial program, it has evolved and is getting bigger and better all the time. The women are really opening up and discovering that exercise doesn?t have to be awfully hard and boring.

It?s no secret that chronic disease is a huge problem for Indigenous Australians. Most of these conditions are preventable through lifestyle change. So that is our focus ? simple ways to live a healthy, happy life.

How is the project making a difference in the community? What changes have you seen?

I have seen very big, exciting changes both in their body composition and in their self-confidence and self-esteem. The women are becoming stronger, both physically and mentally.

The community also now has a garden with vegetables and herbs, giving people a chance to access affordable fresh food items and the opportunity to grow new foods that have not been tasted before.

Historically, when the community existed as a government run mission, community or family gardens were common, so having a garden for the community is connecting with the past but also the present and future.

What have been the biggest successes of the project to date?

The improvements in body composition and cardiovascular health are fantastic, but I?ve really enjoyed watching these women grow within themselves. The improvements in social and emotional health and wellbeing have been by far the most rewarding.? This confidence and ability to understand about healthy choices has been an empowering process to watch.

We?ve had participants enter the program with pre-diabetic Blood Sugar Levels but then turn that around with physical activity and a few simple dietary changes.

We?ve also recently had a wave of smoking cessation successes as well. We have many clients either moving through the stages of change or actively quitting.? All these factors really change someone?s life path.

There is more to life than chronic disease and premature morbidity. Within this supportive environment the women are seeing and feeling this. It?s an absolute pleasure to observe these life changes knowing the women will get more out of life.

And what have been the biggest challenges?

Probably the two biggest challenges are sorry business and lack of motivation through winter.

The women just don?t want to leave their houses through winter, which we can all relate to. We are trying to work out better intrinsic motivation skills for the women to learn.

This winter we have created a ?Winter Challenge?. We have done all the tests and measurements and will re-do them on the first day of spring. The participant with the biggest change in body composition and/or cardiovascular fitness will win a prize. So far, this winter our numbers have only slightly dropped which is very encouraging. The types of activities change to suit the season too.

Being flexible within the program is very important, as things change constantly.

Do you think your community(s) will continue spreading the health message after your program ceases?

I think what we are doing is definitely teaching the women about ways to look after themselves and their families in how to be healthy. There has been an exciting ripple effect that has flowed on in their family groups.? This is an achievement in itself as the extended family are being taught and educated by the women.? They are being educated about simple ideas to incorporate healthy living into their everyday lives outside the program.

However, we are hoping this is an ongoing project. Exercise is not something you do for 10 weeks, 6 months or a year. Exercise is forever. We need to continue to provide these women with an environment they feel comfortable in to continue to exercise and feel good about themselves. The only way good improvements will be sustained is through a sustained effort to the continuation of programs such as these.

We have seen when the program stopped, the women put the weight back on and we were back to square one when they started again. We need to keep them engaged and motivated for long-term health benefits.

Yummy Love is a pastry shop that is fairly popular in Seoul, South Korea. He does not only sell his pastries, but cook em right in front of you! The owner of the shop, a nice caring man, loved his shop to bits, but he had a little secret of his own. He had six little dolls that he made from scratch. They weren't really a secret, since the stayed at the shop window, but there was something about them that made them different. Now what made those dolls different from any other dolls was that they were alive. After the owner had accidentally feed them all different types of Korean pastries, they sprang to life. They were able to talk and walk, they could even turn themselves into a normal human being! But here's the catch, they live on whatever pastry that the owner gave them. If they don't eat that certain pastry at least once a day, they'll lose their life and crumble to dust. But the owner always cooked those pastries for his little dolls, but then a fire breaks loose in the shop during the night. The dolls make it, but not the owner. What were they gonna do? The only life source was gone? But then the cooks that worked for the owner come to the shop to see it burned. The dolls only have one choice, they're gonna have to make the cooks take them home!

Serena Williams faces Radwanska in Wimbledon final

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? More than once during the past fortnight, Serena Williams has won an important point at Wimbledon and then returned to the baseline, her clenched fist leading the way.

The ferocity of the gesture is understandable, given the obstacles she has beaten back in the past couple of years.

A succession of health issues led to a long layoff that forced Williams to mount a career comeback, and she'll try to cap it Saturday when she plays Agnieszka Radwanska, the first Polish player to reach a Grand Slam final since 1939.

Williams seeks her 14th major title, and would tie her sister Venus with a fifth win at Wimbledon.

"I'm so happy to be playing," she said. "I've been through so much in the past year or two years, it has been unbelievable."

This week Radwanska has been ailing herself, battling an upper respiratory illness that makes it difficult to speak and forced her to cancel a news conference Friday.

"I will do whatever it takes to make sure I'm ready to play the best I can," she said in a statement.

While the No. 3-ranked Radwanska seeks to become Poland's first Grand Slam title, the No. 6-ranked Williams has a shot at her first major championship since Wimbledon in 2010. Shortly after that victory, she cut her feet on glass at a restaurant, required two operations and spent more time in the hospital because of blood clots in her lung and a gathering of blood under the skin of her stomach.

"I really thought Serena was going to die," said her father and coach, Richard Williams. "This is the most important tournament that Serena would ever win ... because Serena didn't think she'd ever play tennis again. She told me so."

She was sidelined nearly a year before rejoining the tour in June 2011, and her ranking sank to 175th.

"I just wanted to make it through everything that I was going through and become a survivor," she said.

The comeback proceeded in fits and starts. She lost in the fourth round last year at Wimbledon, and reached the final of the U.S. Open before losing to Samantha Stosur.

She was beaten in the fourth round at this year's Australian Open, and then came her stunning defeat in May against 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano in the first round at the French Open. It's the only time in 48 career Grand Slam appearances that Williams lost her opening match.

With older sister Venus' fortunes in decline as she deals with an autoimmune disease, some speculated the family might never win another major title.

Now, with one more victory, Wimbledon will again become the Williams Open. Serena, Venus or both have reached the final in 11 of the past 13 tournaments. They've combined to win nine titles at the All England Club, and the sisters will try for their fifth Wimbledon doubles title on Saturday.

While Serena's a familiar finalist, her perspective these days is different.

"I have so much appreciation for every moment on the court," she said. "I really take pride in playing, especially playing such big, amazing tournaments like this. I just want to do the absolute best that I can at all moments."

After scares in the third and fourth rounds, Williams has lately been close to her absolute best. She eliminated defending champion Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinals, then defeated reigning Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka on Thursday, winning both times in straight sets.

"It's a different Serena we see now," said 18-time Grand Slam champion Chris Evert, an analyst for ESPN. "We haven't seen Serena play as well as she has these last two matches since before she hurt her foot. She has great power and movement, and the confidence she needs to go with that."

As has often been the case with Williams, her play in the tournament improved as the opposition became more formidable. She beat Zheng Jie in the third round, winning the third set 9-7, then edged wild card Yaroslava Shvedova, taking the third set 7-5.

She's a big favorite against Radwanska.

"Serena's playing amazing tennis at the moment," Radwanska said. "I don't really have much to lose, so I'm going to try my best and we'll see."

Radwanska is a steady, dogged baseliner who likes grass ? she was a Wimbledon junior champion in 2005. With a win in the final, she would rise for the first time to No. 1 in the rankings.

But she lacks the weapons of Williams, whose big serve is especially well-suited to Wimbledon's speedy grass courts.

"The championship is Serena's to win or lose," Evert said. "She controls every point with her power."

Williams hit a tournament-record 23 aces against Zheng, then had 24 against Azarenka. With 85 aces in the tournament, she's four shy of the Wimbledon record she set in 2010.

During one stretch in her semifinal victory, Williams won 17 consecutive service points. No wonder she rates her serve as the shot she finds the most fun.

"It's the most reliable, like, OK, yes, you don't have to think, don't have to do anything, just hit an ace," she said with a smile. "It's like a lazy shot."

When she wins, Williams has taken to hopping on the grass like a grade-schooler at recess. But she's no youngster anymore. At 30, she could become the first thirty-something woman to win a major tournament since Martina Navratilova, who was 33 when she won Wimbledon in 1990.

Not that Williams feels like an old-timer.

"No," she said. "Mentally, I'm 12."

She feels more like a comeback kid.
